Opening an environmental and reliability testing lab is a capital decision, not a lease-and-laptop startup. Chambers, power, calibration, quality systems and specialist staff dominate the budget. This guide uses the published Provex Labs tier model to show where the money goes. All figures are illustrative and governed by the Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) — verify with counsel before investing.
| Tier | Investment | Mature Revenue | EBITDA Target | Payback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 — Core Lab | $600K–$900K | $600K–$900K / yr | ~34–38% | 3–5 years |
| Tier 2 — Advanced Lab | $1.2M–$1.8M | $1.2M–$1.8M / yr | ~32–36% | 4–6 years |
| Tier 3 — Full-Scale Lab | $2.5M–$4.0M | $2.5M–$4.0M / yr | ~30–34% | 5–8 years |
Equipment is the largest line: temperature/humidity, thermal shock, HAST, salt spray and vibration systems, often financed with around 25% down on multi-year terms. Next is facility build-out (power, HVAC, safety), calibration and quality documentation, initial staffing, and working capital to reach first revenue around Month 6. A franchise route adds a $75K franchise fee, 7% royalty, 2% marketing levy and technology fees — in exchange for sourcing guidance, SOPs, training and launch support.
Real estate market, chamber count, drive-in capacity for EV/data-centre work, and how much testing you insource on day one. Our co-founder Sajjad Mir — who founded and leads HASTEST Solutions, a separate company — has spent 23 years pricing exactly these builds; Provex leverages that personal estimating experience for franchisees.
